Peter Guenther is responsible for the maintenance of the CO₂ reference gas system of the Scripps CO₂ Program. Since 1969 he has been the sole operator of the Program’s constant-volume mercury manometer, providing absolute calibration of atmospheric CO₂ concentration and oceanic total CO₂ measurements.

Activities

• Operate constant-volume mercury manometer (CMM) for measurement of CO₂ concentration of atmospheric CO₂ reference gases.
• Investigate performance of the CMM in relation to that of alternative calibration systems and instruments.
• Maintenance of CMM for long-term stability.
• Study of the calibration of long-term and historic data sets of CO₂ concentrations in the atmosphere, oceans, and reference gases.
